USDA National Scholars Program Offers Full Scholarship (Incoming Freshmen AND Rising College Sophomores & Juniors)

Earn a full-scholarship AND career employment, upon graduation, through the USDA/1890 National Scholars Program!

The USDA 1890 NSP scholarship is awarded annually and must be used at one of the eighteen 1890 Historically Black Land-Grant Institutions which includes Florida A&M University. Each award provides annual tuition, fees, books, room and board, employee benefits, use of a laptop computer, printer and software while on scholarship, for each of the 4 academic years. The scholar is required to work in the Student Educational Employment Program during school breaks (typically during the summer) and agree to 1 (one) year of service with the U.S. Department of Agriculture for each year of financial support at the completion of the scholar's bachelor degree program. Each annual scholarship renewal is contingent upon satisfactory performance and normal progress toward the bachelor’s degree.

WHO SHOULD APPLY: Applicants must be U.S. citizens. High school seniors earning a high school diploma or a G.E.D. certificate and entering the first year of college and pursuing a bachelor's degree. Rising college sophomores and juniors may also apply. Eligibility requirements include a minimum 3.0 GPA on a 4.0 scale (unweighted).

This four-year scholarship is awarded to students based on academic merit, financial need and an essay that demonstrates a personal history of overcoming adversity.

The award includes tuition and fees, on-campus room and board, books and supplies and a $1,500 stipend per semester. At UM, that totals more than $50,000 annually. The priority deadline for students who are interested in scholarships at Georgia Southern is approaching!

November 7th is the application deadline for our first scholarship event, Southern Scholars Showcase, for students who have a 1300 SAT score (critical reading plus math only) or a 29 composite ACT score.

Students who meet the requirements for Showcase need to submit a scholarship application and complete their admissions application. Students who are applying for the University Honors Program must also have a letter of recommendation from a teacher or staff member that they have worked closely with in high school. If they are invited to attend the event, they will have the opportunity to interview with faculty and staff for all scholarships for which they are eligible.

Plan to major in a course of study that focuses on STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, or Math). Select Design, Marketing, Accounting, Finance and Business majors are also eligible. See the list of eligible majors. Scholarship recipients will demonstrate an interest in pursuing a career in the automotive or related industries using these areas of study.

Award Amounts

Recipients will be awarded one scholarship at either of the two award levels:

1,000 Buick Achievers Scholarships of $2,000, available for four years and one additional year for those entering a five-year engineering program.
100 Buick Achievers National Scholarships of up to $25,000 per year, available for four years, and one additional year for those entering a five-year engineering program.

The actual award amount will not exceed the total cost of the student's tuition, fees, books, supplies, required equipment, room and board and other allowable expenses, less other gift aid known at the time of application (scholarships, grants and other awards that do not have to be paid back).

Awards are renewable for the given years noted above or until a bachelor's degree is earned, whichever occurs first. Renewal is contingent upon satisfactory academic performance, full-time enrollment and continuing to major in an eligible field of study.

Awards are for undergraduate study only.

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – In 2005, Laymon Hicks launched a community service initiative to tutor 150 students during his senior year of high school in Tampa, Florida. During his interactions with the students, he realized how little encouragement youth in his community were receiving, and made an earnest commitment to being a source of inspiration for youth facing many of the challenges he once fought to overcome. In an effort to fulfill that commitment, Hicks has become a celebrated speaker, coach and author who motivates and helps youth take a more active role in their personal achievement. Now Hicks has taken his commitment a step further by launching the Laymon A. Hicks Scholarship Fund, which will award one deserving first generation student a $750 scholarship.

“We have all heard the old adage that says you can lead a horse to water, but you can't make it drank. Well, I believe that not enough horses are being led to the water,” said Hicks. “I want to do my part to help pave the way for someone else and providing a scholarship to someone whose shoes I was once in allows me to do that.”

A recent graduate of Florida State University, Laymon Hicks, is no stranger to adversity, but he's refused to let life's challenges hold him back. Instead, he's used his story to inspire and engage youth, and dare them not only to dream, but also to invest in and work tirelessly towards those dreams. Hicks often shares his journey from being a struggling middle school student to serving as the student body president of Florida State University, responsible for leading one of the nation's largest student populations and managing a $10.3 million dollar budget. His messages of determination, hard work, and perseverance have resonated with kids ages 8 to 18.

“It is because of my gift to relate and impact today's youth that I am now able to take proceeds from my speaking engagements and book sales and invest it back into the life of someone else,” said Laymon. “I've witnessed the struggle of students wanting to go to college, and not being sure where the resources and money would come from to pay for classes. I want to reward someone for working hard throughout their high school years so that they can have an opportunity to experience a college course.”

The Laymon A. Hicks Scholarship Fund is accepting applications from first generation students attending a 2-year or 4-year accredited college or university. The student must possess a minimum 3.0 cumulative GPA and submit the application by Friday, May 7, 2010 to be considered for the scholarship. Don't Believe Everything You Hear
Literally billions of dollars in financial aid is available to those who need help paying for college. Yet lots of misinformation clouds the facts about what type of aid is available and who is eligible. Here are some myths dispelled for students confronting the process of securing financial aid.

College Is Just Too Expensive for Our Family

Despite the media hype about rising college prices, a college education is more affordable than most people think, especially when you consider college graduates earn an average of $800,000 more over their careers than high-school graduates. The average yearly tuition and fees at a four-year public institution in 2009-10 is just $7,020. There are some expensive schools, but high tuition is not a requirement for a good education.

There's Not a Lot of Financial Aid Available

In fact, more than $168 billion of student financial aid is available. Most students receive some form of aid. Less of this aid now comes in the form of grants, however; most aid is awarded through low-interest loans or institutional and other grants. You should consider carefully the financing packages you've been offered by each college to determine which makes the most financial sense.

My Parents' Income Is Too High to Qualify for Aid

Aid is intended to make a college education available for students from many different financial situations. College financial aid administrators often take into account not only income, but also other family members in college, medical expenses, and other factors. Aid is awarded to many families with incomes they thought would disqualify them.

My Parents Saved for College, So We Won't Qualify for Aid

Saving for college is always a good idea. Since most financial aid comes in the form of loans, the aid you are likely to receive will need to be repaid. Tucking away money could mean you have fewer loans to repay, and it won't mean you're not eligible for aid if you need it. A family's share of college costs is calculated based mostly on income, not assets such as savings.

I'm Not a Straight A Student, So I Won't Get Aid

It's true that many scholarships reward merit, but the vast majority of federal aid is based on financial need and does not even consider grades.

If I Apply for a Loan, I Have to Take It

Families are not obligated to accept a low-interest loan if it is awarded to them. "In my opinion, everybody should apply for financial aid," says Shirley Ort, director of scholarships and student aid at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill. "Student loans are at all-time low interest rates." She recommends applying and comparing the loan awards with other debt instruments and assets to determine the best financial deal.

Working Will Hurt My Academic Success

Students who attempt to juggle full-time work and full-time studies do struggle. But research shows that students who work a moderate amount often do better academically. Securing an on-campus job related to career goals is a good way for you to help pay college costs, get experience, and create new ties with the university.

I Should Live at Home to Cut Costs

It's wise to study every avenue for reducing college costs, but living at home may not be the best way. Be sure to consider commuting and parking costs when you do this calculation. Living on campus may create more opportunities for work and other benefits.

Private Colleges Are Out of Reach for My Family

Experts recommend deferring cost considerations until late in the college-selection process. Most important is finding a school that meets your academic, career, and personal needs. In fact, you might have a better chance of receiving aid from a private school. Private colleges often offer more financial aid to attract students from every income level. Higher college expenses also mean a better chance of demonstrating financial need.

Millions of Dollars in Scholarships Go Unused Every Year

Professional scholarship search services often tout this statistic. In fact, most unclaimed money is slated for a few eligible candidates, such as employees of a specific corporation or members of a certain organization. Most financial aid comes from the federal government, though it's also a good idea to research nonfederal sources of aid.

My Folks Will Have to Sell Their House to Pay for College

Home value is not considered in calculations for federal financial aid. Colleges may take home equity into account when determining eligibility for their institutional grant funds, but income is a far greater factor in this determination. No college will expect your parents to sell their house to pay for your education.

We Can Negotiate a Better Deal

Many colleges will be sensitive to a family's specific financial situation, especially if certain nondiscretionary costs, such as unusually high medical bills, have been overlooked. But most colleges adhere to specific financial aid-award guidelines and will not adjust an award for a family that feels it got a better deal at another school. "We won't bargain, but we want to make sure we know the family's full financial picture," says Ort.

Your school counselor may be the most wonderful and accessible person on the planet, or may be juggling a thousand students and barely know your name. Engineering Expo 2010: University of South Florida

The University of South Florida College of Engineering, and the Engineering EXPO staff are pleased to invite you and your class, youth group or family to the 38th annual Engineering EXPO. This year’s event will be held on Friday, February 19, and Saturday, February 20, 2010, from 9AM to 4PM. The Engineering EXPO has been held annually since 1973 in celebration of National Engineers’ Week. The event works as a venue to promote the engineering field, our institution, and the potential of our students.

One of our main goals is to educate elementary, middle, and high school age students on how math, science, engineering, and technology affect our everyday lives. Engineering Expo will provide students from all over the state of Florida with an opportunity to see engineering and other related technology at work through exhibits from the University’s student organizations, private industry and government agencies. Your students will have the opportunity to participate in activities where they can have some "hands-on" engineering experience.

Among some of the past events/shows (and some this year’s) during the two days of Engineering EXPO include the following: “The Science of Everything” by the Society of Physics Students, Gumdrop and spaghetti tower competition by Tau Beta Pi (Engineering Honor Society), Tours of our Nanotechnology lab facilities, mini baja and formula race cars made by the Society of Automotive Engineers, a concrete canoe made by Society of Civil Engineers, a Chemical Magic Show, Laser Lights Show and so much more. In addition, the Museum of Science and Industry (MOSI) has performed a very interesting astronomy show. These are just a few examples of the amazing ways you and your students, youth groups and/or families can explore the world of engineering.

The open house on Friday is typically composed of students coming on school field trips from all over the state and beyond! However, Saturday is usually composed of visitors from the general public as well as youth groups, including the Boy and Girl Scouts from all over who will have the opportunity to earn their Engineering Merit Badge. Either day you choose to come, you should be pleasantly educationally enlightened in engineering!

The Institute for Responsible Citizenship is currently accepting applications for its summer leadership program in Washington, DC. The Institute provides America’s best and brightest African American male college students with unparalleled networking opportunities, leadership development, and life‐long mentorship.

PROGRAM HIGHLIGHTS
• Exposure to congressmen, Supreme Court justices, doctors, business executives, educators, and other influential leaders
• Rigorous academic seminars
• Roundtable discussions, including seminars on leadership development
• High‐level internships around Washington, DC

PROGRAM DETAILS
• The program runs from June 5 to July 31, 2010

Harvard University announced last weekend that from now on undergraduate students from low-income families will pay no tuition. In making the announcement, Harvard's president Lawrence H. Summers said, "When only ten percent of the students in elite higher education come from families in the lower half of the income distribution, we are not doing enough. We are not doing enough in bringing elite higher education to the lower half of the income distribution."

If you know of a family earning less than $60,000 a year with an honor student graduating from high school soon, Harvard University wants to pay the tuition. The prestigious university recently announced that from now on undergraduate students from low-income families can go to Harvard for free... no tuition and no student loans!

Before Test Day
Get organized:

Make sure you have two No. 2 pencils and a soft eraser. Pens and mechanical pencils are not allowed.
Have your SAT Admission Ticket and acceptable photo ID ready.
Check your calculator and put fresh batteries in it.
Bring a watch to time yourself. Use a watch that has no audible alarm — separate timers are not allowed.
Prepare snacks to take. A healthy snack will help keep you alert during the test.

Prepare yourself like an athlete:

Get plenty of sleep the night before the test. Your brain will work better if you are rested.
Eat a good breakfast that morning.

On Test Day

Leave your cell phone at home. If your phone rings during testing, it could cost you your scores! We strongly advise you not to bring a cell phone or any other prohibited electronic device to the test center. If your electronic device makes any noise, or you are seen using it at any time — including breaks — you may be dismissed immediately, your scores may be canceled, and the device may be confiscated. This policy applies to any prohibited digital and/or electronic device such as a BlackBerry®, pager, iPod®, MP3 player, camera or other photographic equipment, or separate timers of any kind.
Check to see if your test center is open.
Tune in to your local media, like you do for school closing announcements.
Check online for a list of test center closings.
Leave early. Get to the test center no later than 7:45 a.m., unless otherwise noted on your Admission Ticket.
Go to the center listed on your Admission Ticket. Even if it's not your first choice, you are only guaranteed admission to the test center on your Admission Ticket. You will be charged an extra fee if you go to a different test center, and a seat may not be available for you.
Arrange your ride home ahead of time. Your testing may end a little before or after the times listed below. If you are testing with extended time, ask the supervisor for approximate finish times. For the SAT, plan on being picked up at approximately 12:45 p.m. For SAT Subject Tests™, plan on being picked up at the following approximate times:

9:45 a.m. for one test
11:15 a.m. for two tests
12:30 p.m. for three tests

Taking the Test

Make sure you use a No. 2 pencil. Follow the instructions on your answer sheet when filling it out.
Keep focused.
Use breaks to eat or drink any snacks you have brought with you.
Pace yourself. Each question counts the same. Don't spend too much time on any one question.

This year all 9th grade students must have an ePEP. Legislation requires that those who arrive in high school without a plan be assisted to create one. This may include students who transferred in from another state, came from private school, were home schooled, etc.

Legislation also requires that students review their ePEP at least once each year, beginning with current 9th grade students. Reviewing the ePEP every year and making updates as needed keeps the plan current and helps the student stay on target for reaching their educational goal, which may change as the they progress through high school.
